Here's Lake Wivenhoe with the upper wall of the powerstation visible on the furthest shore. Not many people realise that water actually flows from another dam upstream on Splityard Creek, but it has to go through the power station to get to Lake Wivenhoe where it's stored to supply drinking water to Brisbane and most of South East Queensland.  As you probably know by now, Crystal Coffin describes a scenario where the armed forces plan to protect the walls of both dams and the powerstation from terrorists - but soon after Crystal Coffin was published, can you believe that some nut actually tried it! Sheeesh! Talk about scary!Bonus Question: What type of flower is Nikki scrubbing with sudsy water when the cops arrive at Freeman to get her?Did you know... it took longer to research the military scenes in Crystal Coffin than it took to write the whole book!Q4: What kind of bird does Jayson save from the boat when he uses it to blow up the plane?Hint for Bonus Q: Not BougainvilleaQ1: What is Fletcher smuggling and hiding at Freeman?Q3: Where does the trap door inside the boat house lead?

Secret Writing Tip: Creative ideas can hit you at any time. Use a blank page in the back of your homework diary to keep notes of things you'd like to explore later.

Class Project

Write a short action thriller story about the picture you see on this page. Maybe the powerstation is really a secret military base, or a space ship disguised under the big power turbines, or something else even more interesting? Are your bad guys in the boat, in the plane or maybe sneaking in under water? What are they after, and who is going to stop them? Use your imagination to write the most amazing story you can.

Secret tip: Science and Mathematics often seem boring and repetitive BUT they can be heaps more fun once you learn to think creatively.

Science Experiment

Not all waters taste the same. Ask everyone in your class to bring 2L of clean drinking water from home, including water from different suburbs as well as tank water, mineral water, spring water, ionised water and soda water. Then ask your teacher to help you do taste testing to see if you can tell the differences and discuss your comparisons. (No cheating. Label your cups a, b, c, d and so on so you can't tell which is which before you try them.)
